Warner House, UK

This is a unique 4 bedroom domestic house situated in Berkhamsted, Berkshire. The two storey house forms a sweeping crescent, 20m long by 11m wide, providing a total floor area of 450m2.

The dominant and unusual features of the house, are the doubly curved timber upper storey, the tapering brick chimney, the elliptical brick arch under the roof terrace and overall the predominance of glazing to the rear of the property.

The chimney is constructed from hand made bricks, individually moulded to form the tapering doubly curved profile. The entire structure cantilevers from the first floor level reaching a maximum of height of 9m at its apex.

Careful detailing was required at the interfaces with the laminated oak frame, and the glazing to accommodate the relative deflections of the roof.
