LONDON EYE 4D CINEMA

The Merlin Entertainments London Eye attracts over 3.5 million visitors every year, making it London’s most popular paid attraction. The latest addition to the attraction is a pre-flight 4D cinema experience – a ground-breaking 3D film with spectacular in-theatre effects such as wind, bubbles and mist. This new cinema is located inside County Hall, a listed, rotunda building located adjacent to the London Eye.

DDA worked with Kay Elliot and Collins Construction to create a suitable space for a working 4D cinema in a building which was originally designed and built as an office in the 1930s. The main challenge of the build was demolishing and removing a large area of suspended floor slab and two accompanying columns in order to create the open space required, while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding structure.

Steel and concrete elements were introduced to support the floor space above the new cinema and create the tiered floors required, which accommodate up to 160 guests. The resulting structure maintains the external façade of the building while transforming the internal space into a seamless addition to the London Eye experience.
