The visual simplicity of this building concept hides the complexity of the building fabric.
The roof over the animal enclosure comprises four double layer ETFE cushions supported on a cable structure spanning approximately 15 metres. The high tension forces in the cables are resisted by a braced ring beam structure and vertical concrete shear walls, which are hidden within the perimeter viewing gallery structure and plant room roof.
The use of ETFE as the cladding material and the minimum visible structure provides the dragons with the best environmental conditions for their survival.
The whole building was designed and built within 7 months.
