Hungate Bridge not only connects York with the £150m Hungate development, but is an important addition to the city’s extensive network of traffic-free cycle and foot paths. The 26 metre long steel cable stayed bridge weighs 29 tonnes and is characterised by its supporting mast and tensile steel cables, distinctive timber decking, stainless steel balustrades and theatrical spotlighting. The economical and slender structure lends itself to a modern dynamic profile, while remaining simple and elegant.
DDA were responsible for the full design and detailing of the cycle and pedestrian footbridge including all connections and fittings. The complex geometry of the bridge means it is sensitive to adjustment in compression and bending forces, and due to this sensitivity, additional vibration and dynamics checks were undertaken. The design of the bridge proved to be the most suitable solution for the restricted size and access to the site.
During the project, the deck splices required careful planning and consideration in order to facilitate a rapid build sequence at night, to minimize the need for road closures during the day. Further to this, DDA were involved in the design of the handrail details, foundations and approach ramps.
